GAIL bags double win at Asian Oil and Gas Awards – Innovation Award and Midstream Project of the Year!

India’s natural gas leader and public sector undertaking, GAIL, has received two prestigious awards at the Asian Oil and Gas Awards in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. GAIL was awarded “the Innovation Award- India” for its reduction in LNG shipping cost and emissions through Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfer of LNG with backhauling. Additionally, GAIL received the “Midstream Project of the Year- India” award for installing the first floating Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in Varanasi. These awards recognize GAIL’s outstanding contributions to the oil and gas industry in Asia.

GAIL chartered the LNG vessel AI Gharrafa from QatarGas in Gibraltar and transferred cargo from Castillo De Santisteban into AI Gharrafa through STS transfer. This was the world’s first STS between a large conventional LNG vessel and a Q-Flex LNG vessel. The QatarGas vessel then proceeded to Dahej to discharge the cargo originally planned to be discharged by GAIL’s vessel, and GAIL’s vessel returned to the next loading port from Gibraltar. This innovation resulted in savings of approximately 8,736 nautical miles, equivalent to approximately 7,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Furthermore, it shortened the voyage of GAIL’s chartered vessel from 54 days to approximately 27 days.
