Indian telecommunications company Airtel has launched a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) offering called Xstream AirFiber, which will provide high-speed internet to customers in areas where access to fiber is a challenge. The service is being launched in Mumbai and Delhi, with a pan-India rollout to be conducted in a phased manner.

Xstream AirFiber is powered by 5G and is expected to provide customers with internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps. The service will offer an “extremely reliable and robust” solution for data-intensive activities such as gaming and streaming, according to Airtel. The company has also partnered with Qualcomm Technologies to bring the service to its customers.

The launch of Xstream AirFiber is significant as it marks the first time that a fixed wireless access offering powered by 5G has been launched in India. The service is expected to benefit customers in areas where access to fiber is limited, providing them with a high-speed internet solution that is easy to set up and use.

Airtel has stated that the Xstream AirFiber service will be available on a free trial basis to select customers. The company is also expected to face competition from other telecommunications companies in India, who may launch similar services in the near future.

Airtel, one of India’s leading telecommunications service providers, today, announced the launch of Airtel Xstream AirFiber, its fixed wireless access (FWA) offering, on 5G for consumers in Delhi and Mumbai.

Commenting on the initiative, Shashwat Sharma, Director – Consumer Business Bharti Airtel, said, “India has seen the rapid growth of home broadband but there still remain areas with no access to hi-speed internet at home due to the physical challenges of laying fiber in a country the size of India. While fiber to the home will always define the best experience of Wi-Fi at home, AirFiber helps bridge the experience gap for everyone else. Today, we are delighted to launch Xstream AirFiber for consumers in Delhi and Mumbai with a pan-India rollout planned soon.”
