We know we can’t be the only ones who love K-Dramas and Asian shows and wanted to provide a space where we could meet and connect.

Netflix’s TV series Beef.  Starring Steven Yuen (The Walking Dead, Burning, Minami) and comedian Ali Wong (Always Be My Maybe, Tuca and Bertie, Paper Girls).

Beef is a dark comedy that navigates through emotionally charged situations and flawed characters while be grounded in the Asian American experience.  This show has made a huge impact on AAPI representation with a lot to unpack.  If this has been on your watch list, but you haven’t had a chance to check it out, this is great excuse to start watching it.

For our Inaugural meeting, we will be posing questions for the group based on BEEF to discuss, followed by a K-Drama trivia. Whether you are new to K-Dramas and Asian tv shows or an avid watcher, we welcome you to join our K-Drama and meet your fellow K-Drama+ enthusiasts!

While there are plenty of terrific new Korean shows available on Netflix ranging from romance to horror to action- whenever I’m asked for K-Drama recons, I always tell people to start with Cunnings Single Lady.

k-dramas Reviews

“I used to watch a lot of k-dramas a few years ago so my favorite might be a little old, it’s called It’s Okay That’s Love. Not to be confused with It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, which I heard was also really good. It’s one of my favorites because it was one of the first k-dramas to talk about mental health. 

I’ve recently gotten back into k-drama and right now I’ve been watching, but also not watching a new k-drama called Doctor Cha. I say that because its on Netflix but I’m watching it through TikTok. I haven’t committed to watching the full thing yet since episodes are still coming out yet, but I’ve essentially seen all the clips on TikTok. It’s about an under-appreciated mom who is going back to becoming a full-time doctor after she gave up her dreams when she got pregnant. There’s a lot more in-between but I love seeing her gain her confidence and stand up for herself. 

Crash Landing on You” is an enchanting romantic drama that tells the story of a South Korean heiress who accidentally lands in North Korea after a paragliding mishap. The chemistry between the lead actors, Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin

Queen Maker Review

“It’s really tough to pick a favorite, but I think I’ve watched REPLY 1988 almost 10 times at this point. The show is about 4 families who live in this small neighborhood in Seoul in 1988. Even though I wasn’t born during this time, I love seeing what Korea was like in the late 80s-early 90s and seeing such a close bond between neighbors, almost like family. With most people living in apartments nowadays, not too many people are that close with their neighbors anymore, so it’s nice to see how things used to be and reminiscence a bit.

I’m currently watching Queen Maker, which is about this fixer, who used to work for a conglomerate family, trying to help this civil rights lawyer to become the president of Korea. Always love seeing women supporting each other!”

Beef Review

“I watched Beef twice in a row, both times within 48 hours. The show’s topics really resonated with me, sometimes hitting a little too close to home. Growing up in a household where feelings and emotions were put on the back burner to grit and ambition, I was equally frustrated and understanding of all the characters. And, in classic A24 fashion, the show gave twists and turns that made you wonder how it could get any more wild (and then it does!)”

“It’s really hard for me to pick a favorite, but I think it’s a tie between Our Blues and Mr. Sunshine. I loved Our Blues because the cast was just amazing. I loved the intertwining stories and how it touched on so many different topics that are not mainstream in Korea society (or so I’ve heard). I picked Mr. Sunshine because I learned a lot about the Japanese occupation of Korea. It made me research more on the topic and I learned about how this time period affected my trajectory as a Korean Adoptee.
